WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 15, 2024) – The Pew Research Center released a new study on the role of French Catholics in the exploration and colonization of the Mississippi Valley. The study found that French Catholics played a significant role in the exploration and colonization of the Mississippi Valley, beginning with the French Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette and the explorer Louis Jolliet in 1673.

The study also found that French Catholics established a number of settlements in the Mississippi Valley, including New Orleans, founded in 1718. These settlements played an important role in the development of the Midwest and the United States as a whole. The study also found that French Catholics played a significant role in the fur trade and the economy of the Mississippi Valley.
